Facilitation

Every day, leaders must work together to make progress on public issues. Often, though, their well-intentioned efforts are thwarted because they don’t know how to juggle multiple parties, diverse priorities, technical and legal complexities, emotional outbursts, diverse cultural expectations, and the pressure of impending deadlines.

CBI helps individuals, groups, and communities identify, implement, and evaluate shared objectives. Drawing on our understanding of group dynamics and many years of facilitating meetings and problem-solving processes of various kinds, we tailor our services to meet our clients’ needs.

As neutral facilitators, we ensure that everyone is actively involved. We encourage open discussion, while enforcing ground rules and respecting deadlines. We help diverse groups organize productive meetings and generate implementable agreements. In short, we help our clients get problems solved, and work done. Among other things, we:

  • Introduce procedures to ensure effective discussion
  • Manage “at-the-table” dialogue and meeting proceedings
  • Facilitate timely and focused conversation
  • Help groups name problems and identify options
  • Work to maximize joint gains
  • Help avoid or resolve disputes

Our experience is extensive. We have published the only recognized alternative to parliamentary procedure and majority voting, Breaking Robert’s Rules, for groups that prefer to work by consensus. We have managed large, multiparty policy dialogues for a number of local, national and international clients.
