How CBI Helps Non-Governmental Organizations

Whether tackling a controversial local issue, advocating for national policy, or managing internal operations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) sometimes find themselves inadequately resourced to achieve their desired outcomes. Without experience in designing complex public processes, NGOs often meet challenges when partnering with other groups to promote action across boundaries and achieve specific goals.

CBI provides NGOs with support and guidance on their most important projects. We have worked with NGOs domestically and abroad, to help them strategize, build coalitions, develop internal staff skills, run meetings, and manage conflict. We help NGOs build capacity and leverage their resources by offering custom-tailored services such as negotiation training workshops, stakeholder assessments, meeting and process facilitation, strategic and organizational planning, and project research and evaluation. CBI services range from single events to long-term partnerships in which we work with clients over many years.

Our work with NGOs has ranged from managing mergers to adopting better group decision-making practices. Notably, we have published Breaking Roberts Rules, the only recognized alternative to parliamentary procedure and majority voting for groups that prefer to work by consensus. Our clients have included the Nature Conservancy, the Land Trust Alliance, the Northeast Midwest Institute, the Sonoran Institute, and other local religious and community organizations.
