In July 2001 the Asian Development Bank (ADB) asked the Consensus Building Institute (CBI) to undertake an independent and neutral process of social assessment for the Chashma Right Bank Irrigation Project (CRBIP), Stage III with the goal of initiating a multi-stakeholder dialogue on the subject.

From 1995 to 1997, CBI assisted four towns in Western Maine tackle tough environmental pollution and public health concerns surround the area’s major employer, a large pulp and paper mill. CBI worked closely with the U.S. EPA, Region I, Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and the Maine Department of Health to assist the communities.

CBI assisted the World Bank Compliance Advisor Ombudsman team to address concerns raised regarding social and environmental impacts of the Allain-Duhangan hydroelectric project in India. Issues and concerns included: quality and quantity of village drinking and irrigation water; worker safety near the construction site; assurance of women’s and children’ safety; excessive dust from project activity; and introduction of HIV/AIDS induced by migrant laborers.

The City of Somerville asked CBI to conduct an impartial assessment of the issues surrounding the proposed development of the Assembly Square site in east Somerville. The Assembly Square Conflict Assessment is an inquiry by CBI into the possibility of a successful mediated process among a broad range of stakeholders.

CBI conducts a stakeholder assessment and facilitates a negotiated
rulemaking process on school maintenance funding for the Bureau of
Indian Affairs. -
As part of the Borderlands Project’s exploration of how to balance development and conservation in the rural CT-RI border region, the Village Innovation Pilot (VIP) engaged two towns in creating and implementing a vision for their future. Guided by technical experts and local pilot teams, residents participated in visioning and planning exercises to explore how to preserve a meaningful sense of place (the “heart and soul” of the communities) by integrating new development into town villages and centers.

CBI (with CBI Partner Raab Associates, Ltd.) collaborated with the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) to design and facilitate the National Energy Policy Initiative. The Initiative’s goal was to build consensus on national energy policy among a diverse group of distinguished energy experts, and to bring that expert consensus to the attention of policy makers in Congress and the Executive branch.

Since 1997, CBI has assisted the Alberta Environmental Appeal Board (EAB) to develop and refine their mediation program through training, policy analysis, and evaluation.

Since 1998, CBI has worked closely with the Indian Taxation Advisory Board (ITAB) and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) to help improve relationships and negotiations among First Nations and the gas and oil industry.
