A group of charitable organizations came together to create a non-profit homeless shelter in West Chester, PA, but faced objection by local businesses and residents due to fears about public safety. The County subsequently established a mediated process for working through these issues. Over the course of four sessions and many private caucuses, parties reached and amicably formalized agreement about what services the homeless shelter would provide and when.

Since 2008, CBI has been working with Chevron Nigeria Ltd. and its Niger Delta stakeholders to improve and strengthen their relationships. The work has brought together community leaders, the company, government representatives, and local non-profits, to produce credible information about development impacts. At the invitation of communities and Chevron, CBI is now facilitating the renegotiation of formal accords between Chevron and local communities. The process provides important lessons about how to construct a legitimate space for negotiations that addresses all parties’ interests, even in the most difficult of conditions.

Across the country, decision makers at the local and state levels are turning increasingly to new methods for resolving conflicts that arise during land use decision making processes. For disputes over permitting or enforcement of local and state land use regulations, mediation is considered a reasonable alternative to some litigation. Although mediation has successfully resolved many land use disputes, its has typically been applied ad hoc as inclination and resources determine.
