A group of charitable organizations came together to create a non-profit homeless shelter in West Chester, PA, but faced objection by local businesses and residents due to fears about public safety. The County subsequently established a mediated process for working through these issues. Over the course of four sessions and many private caucuses, parties reached and amicably formalized agreement about what services the homeless shelter would provide and when.

CBI and Justice and Sustainability Associates have sought to prepare trainings and case studies that can benefit those seeking environmental justice across the U.S.

Since 2008, CBI has been working with Chevron Nigeria Ltd. and its Niger Delta stakeholders to improve and strengthen their relationships. The work has brought together community leaders, the company, government representatives, and local non-profits, to produce credible information about development impacts. At the invitation of communities and Chevron, CBI is now facilitating the renegotiation of formal accords between Chevron and local communities. The process provides important lessons about how to construct a legitimate space for negotiations that addresses all parties’ interests, even in the most difficult of conditions.

Corporate social responsibility has firmly established itself as a buzzword over the past decade. But far from being an empty phrase, CSR is constantly evolving to better address conflicts that arise between businesses and communities. Today's global CSR discourse is moving beyond the need for reporting on CSR compliance, toward a focus on the question of effective remedies. CBI has been working with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government's Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative to explore the role that mediation and other problem-solving approaches play in resolving disputes over business impacts on society. In August 2003, with the help of CBI, the Fire Island Off-Road Driving Regulation Negotiating Committee reached consensus on an agreement to guide the drafting of new off-road driving regulations.
